The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Children (CalWORKs) program was created to serve adults with dependent children. Participants receive financial support and a full array of services for 60 months as they work with an Employment Specialist to follow an individualized employment plan. This plan may include job preparation, assessment, training, counseling and treatment, education and job search activities which lead to a job and self-sufficiency. All workforce development services are accessible to CalWORKs participants.
CalWORKs participants receive food stamps and Medi-Cal, and may also receive subsidized child care, a transportation allowance, and assistance with uniforms, books or other support needed in order to participate in Welfare to Work activities. In addition, participants also have access to a broad menu of services to help the adults make a successful transition from welfare to work and to assure the health and well-being of their children.
Once CalWORKs participants are successful in finding jobs and are no longer receiving financial aid, they are still eligible to receive Career Advancement and supportive services for a period of time. These services are designed to help clients stabilize their employment and increase their skills so that they can qualify for better-paying jobs. CalWORKs offers neighborhood-based services at four locations: 170 Otis Street, 1800 Oakdale Avenue, 745 Franklin Street and 3120 Mission Street.
