The Office on the Aging is the Area Agency on Aging for the City and County of San Francisco which is specifically charged with planning, coordinating and providing community-based services for the elderly. The Older Americans Act of 1965 as amended created Area Agencies on Aging as the primary vehicle for organizing, coordinating and providing community-based services and opportunities for older Americans and their families.
Area Agencies on Aging were established by the Administration on Aging (AoA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, headed by an Assistant Secretary for Aging. AoA is the federal focal point and advocacy agency for older persons, as mandated by the OAA, and administers most OAA programs at the federal level.
