Find out how to become an in-home supportive service provider to a family member or another recipient. 

Providers for In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) of San Francisco County are caregivers who get paid by the state to provide services to IHSS recipients. The IHSS recipient can be a family member or someone the provider doesn't know.  

Pay Raise for Providers: San Francisco’s IHSS providers will get an hourly wage increase in February 2019! A $3.75 increase will be phased in by July 2022. Learn more

How to Become a Provider

To become a paid IHSS provider, you must complete all five steps of the enrollment process and pass a background check.

Attention former IHSS providers: Before enrolling, please call 415-557-6200 to find out if your provider status is still active.

Start your enrollment process online

  • Go to enrollment website.
  • Create an account and write down your username, password, and answers to the security questions. All three are case sensitive and must be re-entered to watch the videos.
  • Watch the mandatory videos.
  • Schedule an orientation appointment.

Prepare for your orientation at 77 Otis Street

  • Bring your original Social Security card. Copies are NOT accepted.
  • Bring your current driver's license or U.S. government-issued photo ID. Your name on the Social Security card and ID must match.
  • Bring work authorization (required only if your Social Security card states "Valid for work with DHS or INS authorization").
  • Complete the Independent Provider Packet (IPP). Make sure your recipient signs the SOC426a and bring the packet to orientation.

Attend your orientation appointment with IDs

  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • Sign registration documents and submit completed IPP forms. 
  • Receive a Live Scan form and a list of fingerprinting services.

Get background check

  • Complete the Live Scan form and bring it to the fingerprinting service. The Live Scan cost ranges from $55 to $75. The Public Authority charges $47 to those who completed the IHSS provider orientation.  
  • Keep a Live Scan copy and payment receipt.

Once your background check has cleared, you will receive your first timesheet by mail.
