Resource Families Become a Foster Parent

San Francisco’s foster youth need families from all neighborhoods and backgrounds.

If you have room in your heart and home, become a foster parent – we need you!

All children need and deserve a safe, nurturing, and consistent place to live where they can thrive and mature. However, due to limited availability of resource homes in San Francisco, over half of the foster youth in HSA’s care are placed outside of the county, meaning that if a child must be removed from their home, they are frequently also removed from their school, family connections, and community. We want to minimize this, and keep foster youth in our city by increasing the availability of eligible resource families (foster families) in San Francisco.

If a child must be removed from their home to ensure safety, HSA and our partners recruit and support resource families to care for children in foster care. Becoming a resource family is deeply rewarding and comes with a financial reimbursement, as well as medical, mental health, and educational support. And contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be married, own a home, or employed in a traditional 9-5 job to qualify.

Through an innovative partnership with a local tech startup, HSA developed a new website, SFCaresForKids.org, aimed at expanding the number of foster resource families in our city and providing greater access to mentorship and adoption opportunities that increase the chances youth will have successful experiences in foster care.

Featuring a user-friendly and efficient online certification process for potential foster resource families, the website also significantly reduces the time spent by social workers and potential applicants on the application process, and cutting approval timelines down by several weeks.
