In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) For IHSS Care Providers

Find out how to become an IHSS care provider to a family member or another care recipient. 

Providers for IHSS of San Francisco City and County are caregivers who get paid by the state to provide services to IHSS recipients. The IHSS recipient can be a family member or someone the provider doesn't know.  Want to become an IHSS Care Provider?  Follow the steps below.

How to Become a Provider

Start your enrollment process online

  • Go to the enrollment website. (If you are a former IHSS provider, call 415-557-6200 to find out if your provider status is still active.)
  • Create an account and write down your username, password, and answers to the security questions. All three are case sensitive and must be re-entered to watch the videos.
  • Watch the mandatory videos.
  • Schedule an orientation appointment.

Prepare for your orientation at 77 Otis Street

  • Bring your original Social Security card. Copies are NOT accepted.
  • Bring your current driver's license or U.S. government-issued photo ID. Your name on the Social Security card and ID must match.
  • Bring work authorization (required only if your Social Security card states "Valid for work with DHS or INS authorization").
  • Complete the Independent Provider Packet (IPP). Make sure your recipient signs the SOC426a and bring the packet to orientation.

Attend your orientation appointment with IDs

  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • Sign registration documents and submit completed IPP forms. 
  • Receive a Live Scan form and a list of fingerprinting services.

Get background check

  • Complete the Live Scan form and bring it to the fingerprinting service. The Live Scan cost ranges from $55 to $75. The Public Authority charges $47 to those who completed the IHSS provider orientation.  
  • Keep a Live Scan copy and payment receipt.

Once your background check has cleared, you will receive your first timesheet by mail.
