Department of Public Works is the municipal department responsible for designing, building, cleaning, and maintaining the city's infrastructure and public spaces.


Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform manual street cleaning activities, including sweeping sidewalks, curbs, plazas, stairways, and other public areas.
  • Clean curbs catch basins and areas between parked vehicles to ensure proper drainage and cleanliness.
  • Remove graffiti, stickers, and unauthorized postings from public property surfaces such as street poles, garbage cans, utility boxes, benches, mailboxes, fire hydrants (excluding the top), and parking meter poles.
  • Collect and bag trash, ensuring bags are securely tied and placed in designated pickup areas.
  • Report any maintenance issues or deficiencies beyond the scope of assigned tools or capabilities to supervisors.
  • Engage in weeding and vegetation control along sidewalks, tree basins, and gutters to maintain clear and safe pathways.
  • Participate in specialized operations, including encampment cleanups, deep cleaning of neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping abatement in heavily impacted areas.

Program Completion

  • Successfully complete the program, trainees must:
  • Receive “Meets Expectations” or higher on midpoint and final evaluations.
  • Submit a final resume and participate in an exit interview.
  • Maintain acceptable attendance and conduct throughout the program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for Temporary Exempt classification under Charter Section 10.104.16(b).
  • Commitment to a 6–12-month, full-time training program.
  • Willingness to perform physically demanding work in various environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in diverse and structured workplace settings.
  • Punctuality, reliability, Punctual, coachable and adherence to professional workplace standards.
