Schedule: 32 hours per week
Compensation: $26.28 per hour
Duration: 6 months
Location: Various City and County of San Francisco Department Host Sites
Position Summary
The 9910 Public Service Trainee (PST) – Clerical Track is a six-month transitional employment opportunity designed for San Francisco County CalWORKs, CAAP, CalFresh, and Foster Care participants. Through structured, on-the-job training, participants will gain valuable administrative, digital, and professional skills aligned with the responsibilities of entry-level office clerks (SOC 43-9061).
Trainees are placed in City departments and receive hands-on experience in clerical functions such as customer service, filing, records management, and basic office operations. The role also includes mentorship, career readiness support, and wraparound case management to support long-term employment and civil service advancement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform clerical tasks including photocopying, filing, scanning, and mail distribution
- Answer phones and greet visitors using professional customer service etiquette
- Assist with intake procedures, scheduling, sign-ins, and interoffice routing
- Maintain digital and paper records in accordance with confidentiality standards
- Enter timesheets or data into internal systems with accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare simple documents and correspondence using Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Support teamwork, attend staff meetings, and provide general administrative assistance
- Participate in career readiness activities including resume writing and mock interviews
- Complete training assignments and performance evaluations as scheduled
- Assist with compiling, copying, sorting, and filing records of office activities
- Assist with inventory of materials and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be eligible for Temporary Exempt classification under Charter Section 10.104.16(b)

Preferred Qualifications
- Basic computer literacy (email, calendar, word processing)
- Prior volunteer or customer service experience
Program Milestones & Completion Requirements
- Completed hours not to exceed 1,040
- Receive a "Meets Expectations" rating or higher on both midpoint and final evaluations
- Submit a final resume and participate in an exit interview
- Maintain attendance and professional conduct throughout the assignment
Graduation Outcomes
- Upon successful completion, trainees will receive:
- Certificate of Completion
- Letter of Program Completion
- Support transitioning into civil service roles (e.g., 1406, 1424, 1444) or unsubsidized employment
