Free Tax Help How to File Your Taxes for Free

SFHSA's nonprofit partners make it easy to safely and securely file your taxes for free using online tools or in-person services. If you earn less than $66,000, free tax services save you an average of $300 on tax preparation and help you claim tax credits for as much as:   

NOTE: Tax credits do not count as income and they do not affect your eligibility for benefits like CalWORKs, CalFresh, or disability.

Where to get free tax help if you earned under $66,000 in 2020

These free tax services partner with VITA, an IRS program that certifies tax experts to complete your taxes. This year, most services are conducted remotely using online tools, document drop off, and phone appointments. Some offer in-person service on a case-by-case basis.

  • Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA):  Virtual and in-person tax services (located in the Mission District). MEDA also assists with obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Call (415) 612-2014 (ext 6) to make appointments or visit MEDA.
  • Arriba Juntos:  Virtual and in-person tax services at their location at 1850 Mission Street. Call for an appointment (415) 487-3240.
  • GetYourRefund: Submit tax information online. IRS-certified volunteers prepare and double-check your tax return to make sure it is correct before filing. Sign up now to get notified when service begins.
