Learning (SWBL) Track
OST Position Summary
Under direct supervision, the Facilities Support Assistant participates in structured, supervised on-the-job training within City departments to gain foundational experience in facilities maintenance, operations, logistics, and safety practices.
Participants assist utility workers, engineers, and administrative staff with a variety of tasks that support safe, efficient, and functional workplace environments.
This role emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, and the development of transferable skills aligned with public-sector facilities and operations career pathways.
Examples of Duties
- Assist utility workers, engineers, and operations staff in the daily delivery and transport of supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Assist w/reconfigure office work areas and assist with the setup or rearrangement of meeting rooms.
- Learn to perform furniture assembly, relocation of staff workstations, and related move coordination.
- Learn to support inventory and supply distribution; ensure organized storage of materials.
- Identify and report potential health or safety hazards to supervisors.
- Provide logistical support for departmental projects and events.
- Engage courteously with the public and internal staff when delivering materials or providing assistance
Training Goals and Competencies
Through this SWBL track, participants will gain experience and develop skills in:
· Workplace Safety & Ergonomics: Proper lifting techniques, use of PPE, and hazard reporting.
- Teamwork & Communication: Collaborating effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
- Organization & Logistics: Coordinating moves, deliveries, and workspace setups.

- Confidentiality & Work Ethic: Maintaining discretion and reliability in assigned tasks.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
· Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely.
- Frequent standing, bending, and repetitive physical tasks.
- Exposure to both indoor office and light industrial environments.
- Must always observe safety protocols and ergonomic best practices.
Supervision Received and Given
· Direct Supervision: Host Site Department Supervisor or Lead Engineer.
- Program Oversight: SFHSA PST Liaison (ensuring training compliance and participant support).
- No supervisory duties are assigned to this position.
Eligibility and Program Participation
· Must be currently enrolled in CAAP, CalWORKs, or CalFresh programs and referred through a Workforce Development Specialist.
- Must meet all PST Program participation requirements, including attendance, training engagement, and evaluation completion.
Program Completion and Career Pathways
Upon successful completion of the Facilities Support Assistant SWBL Track, trainees may qualify for entry-level roles in:
- 7348 Building and Grounds Worker
- 7514 General Laborer
- Utility Worker / Facilities Maintenance Assistant
- Comparable positions in facilities operations and logistics support across City departments and private sector employers.
