Hire an IHSS Provider
If you prefer to hire a friend or family member to be your IHSS Provider:
- Direct them to enroll as your Provider on the Become an IHSS Provider webpage.
- If they are an IHSS Provider already, you can hire them using the Electronic Services Portal.
- Contact the Public Authority to find an IHSS Provider.
- The Public Authority will match you with a list of Providers.
- You will interview Providers to choose the one to hire.

To change your IHSS Provider:
- Call your IHSS Social Worker or call IHSS at (415)-557-6200 to report the last day of service by your IHSS Provider.

- You can hire another IHSS Provider using the Electronic Services Portal.
You can request a short-term backup Provider if:
- You are discharged from a hospital or another facility without home care.
- Your regular IHSS Provider is unavailable.
- You have not yet hired an IHSS Provider.
When to request backup services:
- During business hours: Call your IHSS Social Worker for a referral to the IHSS Public Authority. If you need your Social Worker's contact, call (415) 355-6700.
- After 5:30 p.m., on holidays, and weekends: Call the IHSS Public Authority (415) 243-4477.
