Changes to CalFresh eligibility starting April 1, 2026
Beginning April 1, 2026, CalFresh eligibility will end for certain immigrants without Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR, or green card) status including: Refugees, asylees, and other certain noncitizens that were previously eligible*. This change impacts new applications starting April 1.
Households with these immigration statuses that are currently receiving CalFresh will be impacted at their next recertification period, starting for households with recertifications due in April 2026.
*Certain noncitizens losing Federal eligibility may still be eligible for State benefits under the California Food Access Program (CFAP).
We encourage noncitizens to apply or contact SFHSA for more details about their specific case.
Changes to CalFresh eligibility starting December 1, 2025
Minimum benefit for older adults and adults with disabilities: Households of two or more people age 60 and over or with a disability are guaranteed a minimum monthly benefit of $60. This is a one-year trial change.

Who must be included in the application
- Anyone who purchases and prepares meals together
- Everyone living at the address, such as husbands, wives, parents, and children under age 22
How benefit amounts get determined
Your benefit amount is based on your gross monthly income and household size minus monthly expenses such as:
- Child support payments
- Childcare expenses
- Medical expenses if your household has at least one member who is age 60 or older or has a disability
- Rent or mortgage
- Utility and phone expenses
Resources exempt from your application requirements include investments, property ownership, and bank accounts. But, income from those resources will count as part of your household’s total gross income.
If you do not get the max allotment for CalFresh, you may be eligible for a SUAS payment:
